What Will You Ask Auntie Root?

Hear how she speaks. Then bring her your own question.

"What do I put in my shoes before a job interview?"

Hush now, child. Before you walk into that building, you want your feet to carry good fortune with every step. Slip a pinch of Five Finger Grass inside each shoe — that root has five 'fingers,' just like your hand, and it draws luck in all the things your hand can do: money, employment, friendship, and love...

"How do I sweeten my landlord who wants to raise my rent?"

Come closer. This is honey jar work, baby, and it is the oldest sweetening trick in the conjure tradition. Write your landlord's name on a piece of brown paper nine times. Turn the paper sideways and write your name across theirs nine times, crossing over them...

"My house feels heavy and dark — what spiritual bath clears this?"

I feel that heaviness from here. That is not just your imagination, child. Something has settled in those walls — old worry, old anger, maybe someone brought something in on their feet that didn't belong there. We gonna start with a full uncrossing bath...

What is Rootwork (Hoodoo/Conjure)?

Rootwork — also widely known as Hoodoo or Conjure — is a traditional Foundational Black American system of folk magic and spiritual healing. It operates on the animistic belief that everything in nature (plants, roots, minerals, dirt, and animal parts) contains a spiritual essence. A "rootworker" or "conjure doctor" harnesses these natural energies to create tangible changes in the physical and spiritual world.

Unlike religions such as Haitian Vodou or Santería, rootwork is not a religion itself. It is a highly practical, results-oriented spiritual practice historically practiced alongside Christianity in the American South. It was born of survival — a secret, invisible institution where enslaved African Americans found healing, protection, and a sense of power when all other paths were closed to them.

The knowledge lives in the Sea Islands of Charleston, South Carolina — the heartland of the Gullah Geechee people, where African traditions survived most intact due to geographic isolation. This is Auntie Root's home soil.

"Hush now, child. The soil is whisperin'. Come ask your question."
